Pope John Paul II – Life, Death, and Dignity

Pope John Paul II died as he lived  - in simple but enormous faith.  His “death with dignity” was a natural sequence to his life with dignity, reflected in the tributes offered by people in all walks of life, all ages, all faiths, and no faiths.

He was forthright in his defense of life at its most vulnerable, speaking out to teach of the value of life before birth as well as after. As he aged he reminded us of the undiminished value of life at the end, when society tends to consider us as useless and therefore valueless as we were before we were born.  Then he publicly showed us the value of life at that period, as he depended more and more on the people around him to help him with the simplest of his needs.  He demonstrated by his life the meaning of human dignity and human value.  What a gift he gave us!

President Bush said:

“Pope John Paul II left the throne of St. Peter in the same way he ascended to it -- as a witness to the dignity of human life.  In his native Poland, that witness launched a democratic revolution that swept Eastern Europe and changed the course of history.  Throughout the West, John Paul's witness reminded us of our obligation to build a culture of life in which the strong protect the weak.  And during the Pope's final years, his witness was made even more powerful by his daily courage in the face of illness and great suffering.”

He also ordered that US flags be flown at half-mast at federal government facilities in Pope John Paul’s honor.

The National Right to Life Committee’s  president Wanda Franz, Ph.D said:

“Pope John Paul II was an unfaltering voice for the unborn, the disabled and the elderly and was a strong defender of the right to life.  His stalwart opposition to the evils of abortion, infanticide and euthanasia was grounded in compassion and love and he will be deeply missed.”
