When Does Human Life Begin?
Have you sometimes struggled to explain to someone what is so obvious to us pro-lifers?
This article by Dr. Maureen Condic explains in strictly scientific terms why the inescapable conclusion is that human life begins at conception. It furthermore does it in terms that any of us, with a bit of effort, can understand. Read it with a pencil in your hand, to underline key words and phrases, read it slowly, re-reading as necessary, but read this paper!
Print it out, grab your pencil, and have at it.
Truly, you wont be sorry.
Condic gives a good answer to the standard objection that a baby isnt a baby until its born, just as a car isnt a car until it rolls off the production line. Until that point a car is just a collection of parts, and many people would have you believe that the same logic applies to babies. Look for her explanation its very useful.
In an interview with Zenit, asked who should read the paper, she says
I think every person who is concerned about the important "life-issues" of health care, abortion, assisted reproduction and stem-cell research should read this article, because understanding when life begins is the basis of a sound political, ethical and moral debate on these complex and difficult topics. Certainly, all those charged with the formation of public policy on these matters should read this argument and think seriously about its implications. If we cannot know what a human embryo is and when it comes into existence, we cannot make sound judgments regarding any of the issues surrounding the human embryo.
